The following is a transcript of a note written by his brother Simon Isaacs
(QC) and Retired Judge of the Supreme Court of NSW in 1983

"S.S. Ballarat"
The following recollections of a voyage of the immigrant ship from Tilbury Docks to Sydney in 1913 where given by Mr Simon Isaacs of Sydney 95-0030, a retired Judge on 31 October 1983.
"I came out to Australia on that ship when I was eight years old. My father had came out from London two years previously on the same vessell. My mother, and two brothers were with me on the trip. The Ballarat was a coal burner.
We came down the coast of Africa and had very rough seas at one stage. The huge waves came crashing over the deck and washed the radio mast overboard.
We had no radio communication for 4 days.
A terrible acident occurred with a milk urn of boiling water being carried across the deck by two members of the crew. The handles were so hot they had tea towels through them. The ship was rolling a lot in the heavy seas and the urn tipped over and badly burned my baby brother who was playing nearby on the deck. He didn't last the night and died about midnight.
The Captain said that he would have to be buried at sea as they did not have any refrigeration facilities on board. The service took place at 8 o'clock the next morning. I remember it well. They wrapped the body in a Union Jack.
Somebody took a photograph of it all. My sister, now in a nursing home at Hunter's Hill, has the photograph.
My father came out to Australia because he was very poor and the opportunity for work in London were not too good.
The "Ballarat" arrived in Sydney on Boxing Day 1913. I am nearly 79 years old."
